AUCKLAND MANUKAU EASTERN TRANSPORT INITIATIVE
AMETI is a group of transport projects for the eastern suburbs.
The aim is to give residents greater transport choices by improving public transport, walking and cycling facilities and reducing traffic congestion.
Another major aim is to unlock the economic potential of the area by improving strategic transport links.

Summary
AMETI projects are spread across a number of years, meaning they are at various stages of development – from construction beginning in Panmure to early concept or design stage for others like the section of urban busway along Ti Rakau Drive.
Overview
Severe congestion in Auckland’s eastern suburbs is holding back the huge potential for economic growth in the area – there are a number of sites ripe for redevelopment if key transport links are improved. There is potential for 40,000 new jobs in the area.
As public transport isn’t currently a realistic travel choice, its use is very low, less than 4 percent of all journeys.
The population is also expected to grow by 20-25,000 during the next 20 years, further increasing pressure on the transport system.
AMETI is a major rescoping of an earlier initiative known as the Eastern Transit Corridor.
AMETI will see a major focus on public transport improvements, including an urban busway with high frequency services that will eventually run between Botany, Pakuranga and Panmure.
Some of the key points are (click on the image above for a large project view):
Getting more people onto public transport to free up roads for freight and business traffic
Roading improvements focused on key congestion points like Panmure town centre and the Ti Rakau Drive/Reeves Rd and south eastern highway intersection
The AMETI strategy is to focus local journeys and public transport on the Panmure Bridge route and for Waipuna Bridge and the south eastern highway to become the primary route for through traffic to Auckland central and freight/business traffic.
