Week Starting 14 May 2012

Works Update
Last week, we continued trenching and service installation, and also continued excavations for the new retaining walls on the Western side of Glenfield Rd.

This week, weather permitting, we plan to:

  • start constructing the retaining wall opposite the shops on the Wairau and Glenfield Rd corner
  • work at night on Tuesday 15 May upgrading the watermain between James St (North) and Sunrise Ave
  • install underground services and trenching on the eastern side of Glenfield Rd between Sunset Rd and Wairau Rd
  • continue trenching for services between James St (North) and Sunset Rd.
  • continue the installation of retaining walls between James Street (South) and Wairau Rd
  • begin watermain installation between 574 Glenfield Rd and the top of James St (North)

Please remember to watch your speed as you travel through the work site.

Project Overview

Glenfield Road is a major arterial road serving the north of the city with more than 30,000 vehicles using it each day.  Auckland Transport estimates that this figure will rise by approximately 3% per year.

The project, which began under the former North Shore City Council, aims to increase traffic capacity, ease congestion and improve pedestrian and cycle safety.

Work has been undertaken in four stages in order to minimise disruption to residents and commuters. Contractor, Fulton Hogan will deliver this final stage of the road upgrade.

Stage four will focus on the section of Glenfield Road between James Street (South) and Sunset Road. It will release all of the benefits from the different stages of the project and will join up to future improvements on Albany Highway.

Public Information

A public information evening was held at the end of January at the Glenfield Community Centre to provide residents with up to date information on the upgrade. Both Auckland Transport and Fulton Hogan will continue to work with residents and other stakeholders in the area as the work progresses.

Design Options

The upgrade will include:

• Widening of Glenfield Road to provide two lanes in each direction

• Changes to the Wairau/Glenfield Road intersection

• Road resurfacing

• Safer crossing points for pedestrians with tactile markings for those with a visual impairment

• Widening of footpaths

• 1.5m wide on-road cycle lanes in both directions

• New raised, planted and flush painted medians to improve safety

• Indented bus bays

• Bus priority measures at intersections to improve travel times

• Landscaping and retaining walls

Work is expected to be completed by February 2014.

Background

The first stage of the Glenfield Road upgrade concentrated on the Sunset/Glenfield road intersection. Priorities were to increase vehicle capacity, add additional lanes and improve underground services.

Stage two saw improvements to the section between Bentley Ave and Camrose Place which included:

• The installation of two lanes in each direction

• The installation of raised planted medians

• Intersection upgrades

• New on-road cycle lanes

• Widening of footpaths

• Undergrounding of utility services

• Road surface upgrades

During stage three, the section of Glenfield Road between Camrose Place and James Street (south) was widened to provide two lanes in each direction. The Hogan/Manuka Road intersection was also upgraded.

Preliminary Work

Most of the work during the first six months will involve the undergrounding of utility services. Whilst the site may appear to be quiet at this time, some traffic management will still be necessary.

Features

Changes will be made at Wairau/Glenfield Road intersection to give Glenfield Road motorists priority over Wairau Road traffic. Because Glenfield Road currently has a higher traffic volume than Wairau Road, these changes will improve traffic flow and safety.

A raised median will be built between 543 and 559 Glenfield Road on the eastern side. This will improve safety by separating the lanes of traffic and restricting vehicles from making unsafe right-hand turns. The raised median will terminate at the entrance and exit to the service lane on the western side of the road and a new entrance will be constructed at the southern end of James Street. This will also assist with providing right-turning vehicles with an alternative route.

Other existing medians along this stretch of Glenfield Road will be widened and planted and a new painted median will be created near St Thomas’ Lane to provide safer access for vehicles turning right into and out of side streets and houses.

Impacts

The majority of works will take place during off-peak hours, including some at night to avoid major traffic disruption to peak hour traffic commuters.  Noise mitigation plans will be prepared for night works and wherever possible construction noise will be kept to a minimum. Residents directly affected by the works will be contacted well in advance.

Some delays are unavoidable during significant roadworks. If it is an option for you, consider carpooling, walking, cycling or taking public transport to help reduce congestion at this time. Alternative routes will also be advertised.
