New Lynn Transit Oriented Development Programme

Latest News

Auckland Transport has installed new cycle safety measures on Clark Street in the form of raised lane markings and flexible bollards.

The innovative treatment clearly marks the edges of the cycle lane and is aimed at keeping vehicles out of the cycle lane and protecting cyclists from being knocked off their bikes along this busy New Lynn arterial route.

The raised cycle lane delineators have a curved cross-section and stand about 25mm above the road surface. The curve is safe for cyclists but causes a judder-type effect for motorists.

The picture shows a line of delineators near the Traffic Lights in Clark Street.

They have been laid for a length of 60 metres along Clark Street, finishing at the cycle stop box at the Clark St/Rankin Ave intersection, where a row of six flexible bollards (see inset picture) provide a physical safety barrier for stationery bikes.

The TOD Programme

Two transformational New Lynn roading projects – the new Totara Avenue shared space and the Clark Street extension are completed and being used following completion of stages 2 and 3 of the New Lynn Transit Oriented Development (TOD) programme.

The project included construction of the New Lynn Transport Interchange and improvements to the surrounding road network, completed in September last year. Together they form part of a wider vision of transforming New Lynn into a vibrant regional town centre.

Totara Avenue shared spaceShared Space

The shared space transforms Totara Avenue West into a slow-speed zone that creates a more pedestrian-friendly retail area and focal point for New Lynn’s town centre.

Single paving across the full width of the street now allows pedestrians to move more easily in the shared space and expands opportunities for enjoying outdoor dining, street activities and events.

Important! Motorists must give way to pedestrians in the shared zone and drive to the conditions. Pedestrians also need to take care. Pedestrian-only accessibility zones run along both sides of the street.

Clark Street

New Lynn shared spaceThe Clark Street extension by-passes the shared space. The new 300m dual carriageway extends Clark Street to the west from the Clark/Rankin intersection and curves to the north via a new bridge over the rail trench to connect with Great North Road (next to Cambridge Clothing). The bypass provides a means for heavy vehicles to avoid the New Lynn CBD.

Todd Triangle

The Todd Triangle Reserve is being upgraded as part of the shared space development and will feature several brick artworks – a nod to New Lynn’s clay heritage – by renowned sculptor Peter Lange.

Gardner Reserve

The Gardner Reserve, adjoining the new Clark Street extension, is also being upgraded by Auckland Transport as part of the roading developments.

Parking

Managing parking effectively is vital to achieving the intensive and vibrant residential and commercial developments we want for New Lynn.

As more people live within the town centre or walk, cycle or use public transport to access it, these activities must be supported with appropriate facilities.  This means balancing the wider needs of the town centre as a whole with the need for parking.

We need an adequate supply of parking from new developments and and also ensure that we get the best use of available parking. Long term parking needs to be on the outskirts of the town centre and the majority of parking in the central area should be short-term to allow access to local businesses and amenities.

The next two years will bring further change including a Great North Road and Delta Avenue upgrade, the extension and upgrade of McCrae Way, and a new multi-level commercial development and 299-space public parking building between Totara Avenue and McCrae Way.

The project will result in changes to public parking availability and temporary loss of some car parking during construction.
