The plan for New Lynn

The urban plan says New Lynn will, by 2030, be a unique sustainable urban place centred on a world class transit interchange capable of attracting and maintaining a population of 20,000 residents and 14,000 workers.

New Lynn will be reflective of the rich diversity of the community, a place that is true to its roots and in tune with its stunning wider natural setting.

The development of a new world-class transport interchange was the first step in New Lynn’s long-awaited transformation. The lynchpin in one of the largest urban regeneration projects to occur in New Zealand, the transport interchange was also the single largest investment in Auckland rail in the last 60 years and the country’s largest ever public transport infrastructure investment.

The $300 million project involved putting Auckland’s western rail line into a trench measuring about one kilometre long and up to eight metres deep, building a two-level rail and bus interchange above it, integrating a new roading network around it and encouraging new land development to complement it.
