Whangaparaoa Rd upgrade
Hibiscus Coast Highway to Red Beach Road
In 2012, Auckland Transport secured funding to progress to the upgrade of the 1.6km section of Whangaparaoa Road from Hibiscus Coast Highway to Red Beach Road to the detailed design phase, and has appointed GHD Consultants Ltd to carry out the design.
The design phase follows the scheme assessment phase completed last year, and the preferred option arising for widening of the road from the public displays held in August 2011.
The proposed upgrade comprises the four-laning of the corridor by the addition of two lanes to the south of the existing road, alterations of and additions to underground services such as stormwater and wastewater networks, and the undergrounding of the existing overhead power lines.
The primary driver is that this 1.6km section of the road, without a second access to the peninsula as envisaged and expected of Penlink, reached its capacity of 25,000 vehicle movements a day in 2009.
With construction on Penlink only programmed to commence in 2018 the need to alleviate the increasing congestion on Whangaparaoa Road has made this upgrade project a priority. Letters were dropped off at homes and businesses where GHD need to access properties to carry out surveys to capture physical conditions and constraints, to assist in the design process.
Residents who received such a letter were invited to comment by 11 December 2012.
