Thank you, Aucklanders!
With 15 matches in Auckland and a large number of visitors roads and public transport have been very busy.
Aucklanders heeded the messages to travel early to games, be patient and stay off the roads around venues in the lead up to matches. This was one of the key factors in ensuring things ran smoothly on match days.
Auckland Transport also wants to acknowledge the patience of people affected by changes to public transport and around venues. In particular, residents in the Eden Park area and Western Line train passengers.
About 600,000 people used special event public transport to and from the 15 matches during the tournament. About 6.6 million used public transport in September, 1 million more than September 2010. For the first two weeks of October rail patronage was up 18%.
During the six weeks of the Tournament we met one of our key aims of making it “business as usual”- by keeping Auckland moving on public transport and road to and from school, work and play.
Finally we’d like to thank all of our staff at Auckland Transport, our partners and contractors (including bus drivers, train staff, Maori and Pacific wardens, traffic management and security) – you were our players of the day!
