Wet weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of hardy cyclists riding to the annual Go By Bike Day breakfast events held across Auckland at Orewa, Takapuna, Henderson, Wynyard Quarter and Mangere Bridge.
It has been the summer of rain and despite the weather Auckland Transport was pleased at the turn out and variety of riders at the breakfasts.
Bike maintenance checks, helmet hair styling, cycle map displays, free coffee and food, spot prizes and giveaways were some of the activities at the different locations.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown joined cyclists at Wynyard Quarter and helped cut a birthday cake to celebrate 15 years of Go By Bike Day breakfast events held in central Auckland. The first event was held in Aotea Square in 1997. At the Takapuna event cyclists were treated to a helmet hair style fix while out west cyclists on the go, picked up their breakfast snack at a feeding station on the Te Atatu Northwestern cycleway.
Auckland Transport Community Transport Manager Matthew Rednall says Go By Bike day breakfast events have become a permanent fixture on the cycling calendar in Auckland Transport
Ed MacDonald who rode in from Glendowie to Wynyard Quarter with his 10 year old son summed up the event saying “’It rained when we got up, rained on the way here and will still be raining on the way home. I’ve been to this breakfast before and it’s always good fun. This time I decided to bring my son along and ride in together for his first breakfast event.”
