It was a scorcher of a day and the free snowy ices were a welcome treat for the nearly 200 cycling families who attended the annual West Bike Fest on Saturday 18 February 2012.
Young and old were put through their paces on the cycle training track, a few wobbles were seen when it was time to practise hand signals but Dave Powell from Bike West was on hand with tips and advice.
At the “Pimp my Ride” stand children were invited to decorate their bikes to make cool fashion statements and used hi-viz materials to really stand out. Families were also sent out on a word search looking for clues as they peddled the wonderful Twin Streams cycleway.
Waitakere BMX brought along their electronic start gate, counting down riders before shooting down the ramp and while the kids rode and played mum and dad found a cool spot in the shade for lunch.
The day ended with everyone gathered round for the competition prize draws. Cycle gear, lights, bells and drink bottles were some of the cool prizes. The top prizes were shopping vouchers to the value of $100, $150 and $300 to be spent at Avanti Waitakere.
Auckland Transport would like to thank Cycle West, Sport Waitakere, Avanti Waitakere, the Dept of Cycling and Waitakere BMX for supporting this event.
West Bike Fest is a free event from Auckland Transport’s Summer Cycle Programme for February and March 2012.
