Older Drivers
Last reviewed: 30/09/2010 11:59 a.m.

Driving on Auckland’s busy roads can at times be challenging, but for older drivers, reduced reaction times and reduced joint flexibility can mean they are at far greater risk of accidents and injury.

Mature drivers have a much higher risk of death following motor vehicle crashes and longer periods in hospitals due to increased fragility.

Drivers over the age of 75 are legally classed as older drivers. Changes to licensing rules that come into affect:

  • Your new licence will be valid for only two to five years

  • The renewal fees are lower – because you are renewing your licence more often

  • You need to present a medical certificate each time you apply

  • If recommended by your doctor, you will need to take a 30-minute On-road Safety Test.

The number of older drivers is expected to increase in coming years. Older drivers have a wealth of experience and are more likely to follow the road rules.  Treat older drivers with patience and respect.
