Young drivers are heavily over represented in crash statistics. Drivers from 15 to 19 years old are 11 times more likely to have an accident than those in the 55 to 59 year old age group.

The total social cost of crashes in which 15 to 24 year old drivers were at fault, was $1.1 billion. This is almost one-third of the social cost associated with all injury crashes.
(Ministry of Transport – young driver crash statistics for the year ended 31 December 2008).
Auckland Transport is committed to reducing the number of crashes involving young drivers and works closely with schools, the local community and regional agencies to help change young driver behaviours.

SADD
Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) is a peer education programme that has been in New Zealand for almost 20 years. The primary objective of SADD is to reduce the harm caused on our roads by drink drivers. The peer education programme is run in secondary schools by students, independently of the school curriculum. The organisation is open to any student and SADD encourages participation from across the year levels.
