Travel to and from school has been shown to have a significant impact on traffic congestion. Promoting and facilitating safe alternatives to the private vehicle drive to and from school is one of the ways we can address both congestion and safety issues around the school gate.
The Travelwise programme has contributed to long term safety benefits and a reduction in congestion around schools. Achievements highlighted in the Travelwise Evaluation Report 2011/2012 (PDF 966KB) include taking 12,271 car trips off the road each morning peak.
Auckland Transport’s School Transport Programme aims to work collaboratively with schools to deliver a safe system approach to road safety and reduce congestion around schools.
