Pedestrian Safety

Auckland Transport Central is conducting a  Pedestrian Safety campaign at key intersections in Auckland Central from 12 to 16 December 2011 in Queens Street.

The Baywatch look and feel interactive campaign will reinforce safety messages to pedestrians as they cross the streets of Auckland Central.

The main objectives of the campaign are to positively remind pedestrians to be safe and be fully alert when crossing the streets.

According to NZTA injury crash data for the period 2005 to 2009, in the Auckland Region there were 1,645 injury crashes involving pedestrians. Auckland city accounts for 733 or roughly 45% of these. These Auckland Central crashes resulted in 14 fatally injured pedestrians, 163 with serious injuries and 556 with minor injuries.

The most common pedestrian factors associated with fatal crashes throughout New Zealand are ‘pedestrians walking heedless of traffic’ (crossing the road without paying attention), ‘being visibly intoxicated’ and/or ‘wearing dark clothing’.

The ‘Check Before you Step’ slogan will be used to reinforce the regional campaign.  Drivers should be aware of the increased numbers of pedestrians over the Christmas period in Auckland central whilst pedestrians should be aware their personal safety when crossing the roads.

The campaign ties in with Christmas shoppers, everyday pedestrians as well as the Christmas party season, where people might make uncalculated decisions when crossing the roads after alcohol consumption.

This interactive Pedestrian Safety campaign will last for five days from 12th to 16th December. There will be a follow-on campaign during Orientation Week targeting University students early next year.
